Healthy Homemade Dog Treats You Can Make

We all know that look—the "puppy dog eyes" as soon as you open the fridge. While we love to spoil our pups, many store-bought treats are packed with fillers and preservatives.

At Dogs Love Darlene, we are big fans of healthy, natural rewards! To celebrate the launch of our new website, we’ve rounded up our three favorite "kitchen-scrap" recipes. These use simple ingredients you likely already have in your pantry.

1. The "Power-Up" Peanut Butter Biscuits

These are the gold standard of dog treats. They are crunchy, smell amazing, and are full of healthy fats.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour (or oat flour for sensitive tummies)

  • 1/2 cup natural peanut butter (Note: Ensure it is Xylitol-free!)

  • 2 eggs

  • 1/4 cup water

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 175°C (350°F).

  2. Mix the flour, peanut butter, and eggs in a large bowl. Add water a tablespoon at a time until a stiff dough forms.

  3. Roll out the dough and use a cookie cutter (bonus points for bone shapes!).

  4. Bake for 15–20 minutes. Let them cool completely before serving.

2. Frozen Apple & Yogurt "Pupsicles"

Perfect for cooling down after a long walk or as a calming treat in a kennel.

Ingredients:

  • 2 apples (Cored and seeded—no seeds!)

  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt (No added sugar)

  • A splash of water

Instructions:

  1. Blend the apples and yogurt together until smooth.

  2. Pour the mixture into an ice cube tray or a silicone mold.

  3. Freeze for at least 3 hours.

  4. Pop one out whenever your pup needs a refreshing snack!

3. Two-Ingredient Sweet Potato Chews

If your dog loves to chew, these "veggie leathers" are a fantastic, low-calorie alternative to rawhide.

Ingredients:

  • 2 large Sweet Potatoes

  • 1 tbsp Cinnamon (Optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 120°C (250°F)—you want a "low and slow" bake.

  2. Slice the sweet potatoes lengthwise into 1/3-inch strips.

  3. Place on a baking sheet and dust lightly with cinnamon.

  4. Bake for 2.5 to 3 hours, flipping halfway through. They should be tough and chewy, not burnt!

A Quick Reminder: Safety First!

Before you start baking, remember that some human foods are dangerous for dogs. Always avoid:

  • Grapes & Raisins

  • Chocolate & Caffeine

  • Onions & Garlic

  • Xylitol (Check your peanut butter labels!)
